South Island Ski Itinerary

Ski to your heart’s content and travel through spectacular scenery on this 10-day itinerary through the South Island ski fields.

No matter what direction you travel you will be sure to enjoy pristine snow throughout, try night skiing at Coronet Peak, relax in Wanaka, be awestruck by the night sky over Lake Tekapo and live like a local in Methven.

Day 1: Christchurch

Spend the day exploring Christchurch, set against the Southern Alps, it is a great place to begin your snow holiday. Before hitting the slopes take some time to explore the city with a fascinating mix of heritage, innovation and nature.

Day 2: Christchurch to Methven

Hit the slopes this morning on Mount Hutt just 90 minutes from Christchurch, with its large sweeping slopes it is great for all levels of ability. Spend the night in the village of Methven, stopping in at one of the local pubs for a cosy night out.

Day 3: Methven to Aoraki Mount Cook

Moving south towards the Mackenzie region, famous for being the home of Aoraki Mount Cook, New Zealand’s highest mountain. There is plenty to do in the area, take a scenic flight, soak in a hot pool, or for the adventure seeking take a ride at the tube park. The Mackenzie region is also home to the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve, 4,300 square kilometres of sky that is the perfect place for stargazing.

Day 4: Aoraki Mount Cook to Twizel

Continuing onto the Ohau Ski Field, catering for all abilities the groomed slopes offer amazing views. If you are feeling energetic you can even climb to the top of the slopes and experience some off-piste terrain, before returning to the lodge to relax in a hot spa.

Day 5: Twizel to Wanaka

Situated on the edge of the pristine Lake Wanaka the town of Wanka is only 30 minutes away from the Cardona and Treble Cone ski fields. Take time to explore the beautiful area with lake cruises, and 4WD Safaris before relaxing by the fire at one of the excellent bars and restaurants while you watch the sunset over the lake.

Day 6: Spend the day at Cardrona

Travel just 40 minutes from Wanka to the Cardrona Alpine Resort and spend the day on the slopes. Known for its wide-open basins, beginner trails, long blue runs and off-piste slopes there is something for everyone.

Day 7: Spend the day at Treble Cone

Time to visit one the South Island’s largest ski field, Treble Cone. Famous for long uncrowded slopes and breathtaking views of Lake Wanaka. With two basins to explore and a 4km downhill run as well as ‘Nice ‘n’ Easy’ beginner lift tickets, the whole family will be able to enjoy the day.

Day 8: Night Skiing at Coronet Peak

After a leisurely drive back to Queenstown, there is time to spend the day exploring before getting ready for a night of skiing at Coronet Peak. As the closest ski area to Queenstown (only 25 minutes away), you can hit the slopes from dawn to dusk! Have fun at Park after Dark with freestyle runs, or dine on the deck and enjoy the evening atmosphere.
Night skiing runs on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday nights only.

Day 9: Spend the day at The Remarkables

Finish your ski adventure on The Remarkables amazing ski slopes. The 1.2km chairlift will take you up to the top of the mountain. Perfect for complete novices to accomplished skiers or riders. After a busy day on the slopes, relax in a hot spa or with a therapeutic massage before hitting the town for the evening.

Day 10: Spend the day at Queenstown

Finish up your trip exploring Queenstown, go sightseeing in Glenorchy or Arrowtown. If you are looking to spike your adrenaline try out some of the adventure activities, especially the world famous bungy jumping or jet boating.
